5.0 out of 5 stars The 'Bomb' will blow you away!, 24 Nov 2004
This review is from: How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb [CD + DVD] (Audio CD)
An album of beautifully crafted songs, where some stand out just a little taller than the rest.
'Vertigo' is the fast-burning rock and roll fuse to the bomb, leading you to a collection of music that can't be pidgeon-holed. You'll never forget Edge's guitar riff as long as you live. Amazing!
If it were possible to record the sound of a heart breaking, 'Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own' would be the result as Bono says goodbye to his Father. You'll need the old "I've got something in my eye" excuse when you listen to this wonderfully melancholy sentiment. An instant classic.
'City Of Blinding Lights' with it's twinkling keyboards and driving bassline, combines the best elements of indie with pop in perfect measure. It's a great, uplifting moment and Adam and his bass own it.
'Love And Peace Or Else' takes the dark reverb of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's sound, then ramps it up even further. Raw and dirty and if it wasn't for Bono's distinctive voice, it wouldn't sound like typical U2 - if there is indeed such a thing.
'All Because Of You' is an unsurprising next single release, keeping U2's newly rediscovered love of rock and roll pulsating after Vertigo. Edge is on fine form here, but Larry really goes for it as he knocks holes in his drumkit. If all because of you is about how good someone can make you feel, you'll want to sing it to your significant other!
'Crumbs From Your Table' is a love song wrapped up in metaphor. A song that says as much about unrequited love, as it does about the Third World's dire economic situation. U2 have mastered the art of preaching without actually preaching. Marvelous!
'Original Of The Species' has a hook that is Beatles-esque, leading to a bridge and chorus production sound that could have been born of ELO. And I mean that in the most complimentary of ways! A totally inspiring hybrid of pop and rock. Thanks Steve Lillywhite!
The remaining few tunes I haven't mentioned ALL have their respective charms, where not a single one of them is there merely to plug an album gap. If you don't own a U2 album, this is a great place for you to discover them!
