Wow, what a book. This is the first book I have read by this author and I shall now be searching out everything else. In equal measure the author shines through as fearless, serious, knowledgeable and above all humane. As with all the best travel writers (my personal favourite is Thubron) he seems to be completelt confortable on his own or when mixing with both the (rather unpleasant) powerful elite and the downtrodden (indeed the dying). There is nothing superficial here; for example when confronted with the sick and dying in 1975 Ethiopia we are given the brutal truth of the situation faced by a significant part of the population, but the author doesn't clutter the writing with his own personal feelings (we can guess).
His explanation for the rise in African countries seeking independence from their western masters following the end of the second world war is both enlightening and convincing (to me).
If you wanted a travel companion then this would be the guy to have with you (Michael Palin is genial but somewhat superficial?).
