This review is from: Universal Soldier Day Of Reckoning [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Now putting on a JCvD film in the Universal Soldier, I'm not expecting high theatre or an Oscar winning classic. However this is a particularly nasty film, which doesn't fit at all well into the Universal Doldier paradigm. To start with the plot is virtually incomprehensible. Hard to avoid spoilers but after 105 minutes as the credits rolled, it was kind of "huh, what happened, who was what?" Maybe they'll explain it all in UniSol 5 but I doubt many will be buying.
So far as I could fathom the story involved some sort of cloning by the Government and/or a group of renegade UniSols led by JCvD and Mr Lundgren. Cue pretty much the whole film of having at each other with numerous quite gruesome and bloody death scenes (I counted at least 4 instances of mashed/decapitated/partially decapitated heads). That's not so much the issue, like I said you're not watching Andy Pandy, but the level and intensity of the violence seemed to exist largely to mask the lacklustre story. Oh and there's precious little humour too, come to think of it the film is devoid of any laughs - about the only thing which raised a titter from the wife was a "one for the ladies" fill frontal male nude scene.
And as others have mentioned, I must strongly caution about the several extensive and intensive (more so in 3D) use of strobe effects. Neither the missus or I suffer from epilepsy but we both had to look away. It is astounding and irresponsible of the studio/publishers this film came with no health warning about this either on the cover or prior to the opening credits.
Can't recommend this at all, being cast down with The Sweeney as my worst film of 2013 so far.
