Love Demille. Hate this book.,
This review is from: The Gate House (Kindle Edition)
The Gold coast is one of my favourite Demille books and was so complete and satisfying that a sequel is a big surprise. However Demille reunites his main characters years later with a plausible reason and has John, Susan and Anthony Bellarosa (son of Frank) all living within close proximity of each other. He throws in a shady Iranian, a potential new love interest, Elizabeth, for John and he has a serious girlfriend, Samantha, back in London. The scene is set for some interesting plot developments and romantic entanglements....and he's done it! Demille has set the scene for a great book in the first 200 pages.
However in a completely implausible move he reunites Susan and John and decides to abandon the book he should have written and spends the next 400 pages chronicling other character's reactions to John and susan's reunion. So nothing happens for the next 400 pages. Seriously. NOTHING happens.
Demille's humour is given free rein and every other line is a joke or comic scenario. It is so overdone you soon stop laughing when you realise the plot has stopped in it's tracks and this has descended to just being a joke book. You lose interest in the characters as they are wheeled in and out just to set the scene for more jokes. Worse still I recognised some of the jokes from his previous books. Re-hashing old material is a sign that the creative juices have dried up. Oh dear.
At 400 pages this could have been ok. At 700 it's tiresome and boring.
Hope his next effort is better or he will lose a serious fan.
