This is the only graphic novel I've ever enjoyed!,
This review is from: Bone: One Volume Edition: 1 (Bone Series) (Paperback)
I thought maybe the medium just wasn't meant for me. Watchmen, Maus.. I appreciated the stories but the format just didn't sing for me. Bone blew that out of the water; the humour, the scares, the reveals, every one hit home. I can't remember another story, graphic novel or otherwise, that has blended humour and drama so well. Bone is just brilliant! The character work in particular is outstanding, and the artwork has an epic feel in places that lends this story a scope beyond the intimate characters.
It took a very long time to get through as at 1330 pages this is the biggest book I've ever read. There were parts that dragged but I think that's less due to bad storytelling and more due to the sheer physical size of this book. When you're in the 700s the end feels unreachable! But on the plus side it doubles as a great doorstop/spider-killer.
I normally read YA novels and I've never ventured much into fantasy but I'd be hard-pressed to think of anyone this wouldn't appeal to. I'm so glad I stuck with it and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves a good story, sharp humour, and dragons!
