This review is from: Take Shelter [DVD] (DVD)Based on cinema trailers and all I'd read I had high hopes for this movie.I'm a bit of a cineaste who appreciates a well crafted film and likewise a daft disaster flick for fun. This film is well made but basic,it certainly isn't a disaster film so any potential viewers hoping for thundering typhoons be warned!
Other reviews have kindly used the word "understated" I think 'accidentally vacant' is my alternative description.Understated seems to have been the director's goal but overall I felt the whole movie seemed so detached from the present, from the emotions and events it was trying to convey, that it could have been,in itself a dream.I hoped for a bit more of a voyage through the confusions of schizophrenia, the film scraped past this again with a sense of detachment. Unlike other reviewers I didn't find the pace slow but perhaps that's because I prefer a movie to ease along at its own speed rather than crash along like so many blockbuster films are prone to doing.
Maybe if I'd seen this on the big screen rather than on dvd it would have made a stronger impact upon me (I had to review the ending four or five times to fully get what they'd seen...)but on the whole I would say its enjoyable but a bit of a shrug of a movie. That being said see it, its a thoughtful film just not a life changing one.
