In depth Guitar styles of Blind Gary Davis,
This review is from: Gospel Guitar of Rev Gary Davis [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
My wife bought this for me two Christmases ago, and I am still learning from it. I am a reasonably accomplished "picker" but I find these arrangements challenging. I have really enjoyed the exercise. Reverend Gary Davis has been described as a "Monster Picker" and wouldn't disagree. I was slightly put off by all tunes being religious tunes, but that is just down to a slight embarrassment performing gospel songs in public when personally I am undecided about religion. Ernie Hawkins isn't always the most charismatic of speakers (my wife never misses the chance to take the Mickey whenever she overhears), but his coverage, in depth teaching and demonstration of techniques is comprehensive. If you want to learn any one of these masterpieces, there is more than enough here to carry you through. Ernie leaves no stone unturned in that respect. For many of the tunes, there is the added bonus of a film of the Reverend playing it. The format for each song is, and short introduction followed by a performance of the tune all the way through, often it is old footage of a Gary Davis performance. Then each section is broken down with in depth discussion of how it is done. Then a slowed down split screen showing both left and right hands, to play along to. Make no mistake, this is not elementary guitar, some of it is real finger braking stuff, but it is worth it. It's expensive, but you are getting your money's worth, 14 complex tunes in full detail complete with Tablature. I notice that available recently there are also follow up DVD's of Gary Davis' Ragtime tunes, and of Davis' Blues playing. I shall definitely be getting them sooner or later, when funds allow.
