Waste of money if you have got shorebased text,
This review is from: Day Skipper Practical Course Notes (Rya505) (Paperback)
Like most people doing their Day Skipper practical exam, I'd taken a shorebased couorse over the winter. As part of this we were issued with the RYA shorebased text - a great little book. I wanted to know more about the practical aspects so purchased this practical course notes text assuming (as it was by the same publisher) that it would compliment the shorebased notes and fill in the gaps. However I was very disappointed to see that much of the book is IDENTICAL to the shorebased book - much of the content and in some cases exact copies of the pages! It isn't cheap for such a small text and I'm afraid I feel well and truly had - I might as well have bought the same book twice! Shame on you RYA...
If you already have shorebased notes then please don't bother with this - there is very little new content and you will end up as frustrated as me!

Fair enough, there is a small amount of duplicated material but you will reduce your chances of passing the Day Skipper Practical Course *significantly* if you do not study this book. As you'd expect, it introduces and runs through many of the practical aspects of piloting a boat and it is immensely helpful. The majority of the material is new and you will not know it from the theory course. Some material will be familiar but is complemented by more detailed notes. I was evaluated or quizzed on most of the exercises and subjects in this book during my practical. Beforehand, I'd gambled that I wouldn't need it for my Day Skipper Practical and, as a result, I was unprepared and didn't complete all the sign offs. I had to book a further weekend to get Day Skipper certified. Save a tenner here and it might cost you hundreds - I know, it happened to me. My advice: Don't take the chance, get this book and know what you're expected to do on the Day Skipper Practical.

Tks for that. I'm trying to decide which book to buy for my grandson. Where did you do your shorebased course. I'm having trouble finding somewhere in the SouthWest?
