Like most UK rock fans, I suspect, this was the first ZZ Top album I heard. I was familiar with the track 'La Grange' from their early days, when they used a more subtle approach. This is all-out bombast: roaring guitars and pounding drums, a sound so thick you could cut it like a big cake. Gorgeous. 'Sharp Dressed Man' typifies the album. It uses a simple, well-worn riff, but how they deliver that riff.
The first half of the album doesn't waste a track. Apart from the slow 'I Need You Tonight', which provides a timely break from the usual fare, they're all great rockers. The second half isn't as consistent, 'Dirty Dog' for instance being the kind of track you expect to be tucked away near the end and quickly forgotten. On the whole, it's an enjoyable, if overtly commercial album, its success in part due to those striking and, at times, sexist videos. The early albums offer a more enduring reward, but 'Eliminator' is still worth hearing if you're a hard rock fan searching for that elusive commodity, a good, mid-1980s rock album.
