The Beatles as Chamber Music,
This review is from: The Beatles arranged by Lubos Krticka for String Quartet (Audio CD)
Well, this CD was certainly a very pleasant surprise. This is a selection of 12 well known Lennon and McCartney songs written for the Beatles and one (Here Comes the Sun) from the pen of George Harrison. All have been arranged by Lubos Krticka, a Czech composer of chamber music, who is also well known in the Czech rock and jazz music scene.
This CD shows how well the superb songs of Lennon/mcCartney can be adapted for other music genres. You don't think it will work, but unexpectedly, it most certainly does. The melodies are at times well hidden within the string quartet arrangements, but careful listening reveals them in a truly different light.
The Wihan Quartet, also from the Czech Republic are very well known on the British chamber music scene and they are shown to be capable of treating these songs with great respect, tenderness and loving care, in the rich sound of a top quality recording. My favourites are the slower Beatles ballads performed here: Julia, Michelle, Yesterday and The Fool on the Hill, but the uptempo numbers such as Eleanor Rigby, Can't Buy Me Love and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, also come over very well.
For lovers of both the Beatles music with tastes wide enough to accept these melodies in an unexpectedly different format, and also lovers of the string quartet repertoire, here is a recording to treasure and it is a superb disc. I strongly recommend it to you.
