4.0 out of 5 stars The Last Album, 18 April 2009
This review is from: Jimmy Campbell's Album (Audio CD)
Very much a return to the simpler style of his debut " Son of Anastasia". His intervening " Half Baked" Album was more upbeat and Rock influenced. Stand out tracks here are the 1968 "Salvation Army Citadel", "Something In The Wind" and "Snow Covered Street". I feel the previously mentioned,"patchy" quality of this album does ring true in parts. The song "Baby, Walk Out With Your Darling Man", was altogether a stronger effort with his previous group - Rockin Horse. Additionally the song " Maudie" feels like it could have been written on auto-pilot. Until recently I had not appreciated that the vocals were hastily recorded in a single studio take, to fulfill his contract with Philips. However this singer songwriter's sense of melancholy has always been his unique style , and the Album does not disappoint . Check out his slightly erstwhistle song " By the Light of A Lamp". Yet the fact that this was Jimmy's last Album is cause for sadness. He seemed to be hinting a farewell of sorts, if the lyrics of "It never Rains But It Pours" are to be relied upon. Having at last purchased this final Album, I am suffering withdrawal symptoms, I wish he could have made produced similar riches, or had fulfilled his songwriting school wish, so he could have lived on in perpetuality. Buy and enjoy this impressive work
