This review is from: Asus ROG Xonar Phoebus 7.1 PCI Express Soundcard (Accessory)
I buy ASUS notherboards because they reliable and come with the appropriate software. The Phoebus is good hardware with one critical exception - the optical output jack and the 7.1 analogue side speaker jack are one and the same jack. So if you have a 7.1 speaker setup, as I do, and wish to use the digital output as well, as I do, WIHTOUT messing around pulling connectors in and out then you are out of luck.
The software. As a professional programmer I just cannot see how the software under went any testing that is commensurate with the term professional. The software to configure the hardware is not simple and direct for a user to achieve their basic goals. One cannot even resize the damn window - a typical Microsoft behaviour; this really is a symptom of lazy programming with no regard to the user.
One other problem I am having is that everytime I switch on the PC I am having to test the analogue speaker setup to check that each individual speaker is still assigned to its proper position eg the side speaker is still outputting the appropriate side channel. Quite frequently I have to change the 3 audio leads, between the card and the speaker system, around to get back to the proper arrangement. This means that the software is, on start up is changing the jacks output audio channels - thankfully the optical cum analogue jack seems to be not affected.
All in all, do not buy this hardware.
I hear the cheaper ASUS cards are much more mature and reliable and just as good; a more cost effective solution.

In case you dont know already, the output switching can be restored by going into the speaker setup and quickly select any other speaker configuration e.g 5.1 and then select 7.1 again and this seems resets the right audio to the right channel, its a known bug, i dont know if this has been addressed in any new driver if there has been any, but researching this card and came across a youtube video showing you what to do to fix this problem
