Good, but uneven,
This review is from: Spies of Warsaw [DVD] (DVD)
I usually enjoy David Tennant's performances but wasn't so sure of his casting in this drama. At times he appeared rather ill at ease in his role and the sex scenes with his co-star Janet Montgomery were painful to watch! Tennant was far better when he was dodging Nazis and derring-do in general rather than being the romantic lover entangled with someone else's girlfriend. The settings were excellent and I disagree with another reviewer who called them "twee", but each to his/her own in that regard. I liked the fact that the actors' faces looked European in general, something that is often overlooked in BBC dramas. Tennant looks wonderful in uniform but I'm not sure he could pass for a Frenchman, apart from his hair and eye colouring.
The mood of Spies of Warsaw was troubled and edgy and there was a tangible feeling of unease throughout. Alan Furst's novels can be hit and miss but Spies of Warsaw is one of his best. For comparison's sake, try the novel first and then watch the DVD.
