Oh dearie me,
This review is from: The New Rector (TURNHAM MALPAS) (Paperback)
The words of my title are the kind of thing the characters in this book are constantly saying, and the Rector walks around saying "God bless you" to everyone all the time, despite the context of their meeting. (I've lived in villages and known rectors and none of them ever spoke like that.) The characters are about as believable and their dialogue as realistic as Dick van Dyke's Bert in Mary Poppins - they mostly come across to be caricatures.
Add to that a series of unlikely events to occur in a village (of which people say things like, "Oooh, I'll never forget that as long as I live me dearie" and then promptly never mention it again, bit like a death in a soap), situations and problems which seem to be neatly and easily wrapped up in magically perfect solutions and characters who suddenly act completely out of what little character they have with almost no build up so that it appears they're doing very strange things almost on a whim.
I'm afraid this book had me shaking my head in disbelief more than once and I had to imagine who I'd cast in a tv adaptation and how I'd alter it WHILST I was reading it to stop myself from getting bored. (Ruth the Shreddie knitting nana as Muriel Hipkin for sure!) I won't be buying any more of the series.
