Better than a tablet,
This review is from: Kindle Fire 7", LCD Display, Wi-Fi, 8 GB - With Special Offers [Previous Generation] (Electronics)
I bought the Kindle fire because I was previously unsure about whether I wanted a larger android tablet or smaller Kindle. I choose the tablet at first, a 10 inch android one, that luckily I have been able to sell on to a friend, because I found it too big and cumbersome for reading books in bed. Whereas the Kindle is perfect, and seems better put together than the tablet as well, having such a robust feel to it. I found that I dont really use a great deal of apps either, so the tablet seemed just too much. The Kindle is a loverly size to hold in your hand. A word of advice, if you find the page size and look, not to your liking the first time you read a book, it is adaptably for such as font size, page colours and margin size just by going to the settings. I didnt like the way the original setting seemed to make the book page look squashed until I found that you could expand the side margins.... doh.
My only misgiving, and the reason why I have only scored it four stars and not five, is that Ive just spent over an hour trying to move some books that I have as docs on my mac, to the kindle via usb, to no avail. I understand that you have to download an app for this, which I did, but it still doesnt seem to work, leaving me with the only option of all books being purchased or free via Amazon. Not sure if other people have had this problem or if its just me.

I'm wondering if you are having trouble because these books are on a Mac? I was able to transfer Word docs from a pc using the usb cable without any trouble. Can you try saving them as an Adobe file, and then transfer them? That might work.

It appears that my mac wont let me see the kindle as a separate drive, so I downloaded the app that amazon recomend for mac transfer, tranferred a file to it to where it does show in the filing system of the kindle within the app, but when I discount the kindle from the mac, its not there.

You can also download a "send to kindle" app - don't know if that's the one you've got, but if not give it a try. It adds an option to email documents to your kindle as another right mouse click.
