3.0 out of 5 stars Handel descends into the sellar(s)!, 25 May 2008
This review is from: Handel : Theodora [DVD] [2001] [NTSC] (DVD)
I shall try and make my review short:~
Orchestra/Conducting 5*
Singing 5*

Production Minus, well you choose,no matter how few you give it cannot be few enough.
I bought this on the name of the singers and that it came from Glyndebourne.I didn't notice it was by the truly awful(I have had to sit through other productions by him) Peter Sellars.
I now just listen to the glorious singing, and don't watch the awful visual nightmare!
As it was composed as an Oratorio, maybe trying to stage it was always going to be difficult. So "give it to Sellars" they said,he will liven it up;and actually he managed to destroy it.
If you think I detest Peter Sellars you are right.Just watch(if you can call it that) his "Le Nozze di Figaro",where Cherubino jumps out of the window into the garden.Well,in Sellars Nozze the action takes place high up in an apartment in NY,so quite where poor Cherubino lands up(jumping from the 30th floor or so) I don't know. There are worse examples of his ideas but I won't bore you with them.
Just watch and listen, and forget(if you can) the visuals.

I understand about Sellar's ridiculous Mozart trilogy, but this sensible staging is quite a different matter: seen live, it would leave you stunned.
