Excellent book for anyone wanting to write a novel, or just write better,
This review is from: The Writers and Artists Guide to How to Write (Paperback)
I recently decided to get into creative writing, and potentially, writing a novel, and so have been searching around for some good books to teach me the ropes. What hooked me about How to write was the introduction. Harry Bingham writes with a strong sense of style, humour and honesty. And it was probably the latter which made me buy his book. It's true that you'll be entertained the whole way through this book - something I wasn't expecting when picking up a 'how to write' book. But I also felt like I was being told the truth. This is important because this book's angle is helping you write a novel that will actually sell. Now I'm not that interested in that right now, but I probably will be in the future, and so I appreciated his honesty here. Many of his points come down to: if you write like x (slow moving plot, poor prose, boring characters) no-one will want to buy your book. He drums this home throughout the whole book.
One of the other useful things about this book is that it provides some nice frameworks to analyse books, to work out why some parts are good and some parts aren't. I've already started using these to analyse some of my other books and they are really helpful.
I've just started reading another creative writing book and I already miss this one.
