5.0 out of 5 stars haitink's mahler at its best, 14 Jun. 2006
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mahler: Symphony 3, Das klagende Lied (DECCA The Originals) (Audio CD)
haitink and concertgebouw recorded a mahler cycle in superb phillips analogue in the 60's and 70's available now as a 10 cd set for about £35 or a bit less on amazon

Not all the symphonies were well received, but 3 7 and 9 have always been highly rated and it is joy to hear the 3rd in this new issue...it is on a par with bernstein/nypo but so much better recorded....i own both now ...heaven!!

with haitink evrything is so right and mahlerian, turn it up loud and let it transport u aloft!!

i have haitink's m7 from this set, also a fab recording, so is there any chance of a re-issue ( haitink's 9th is already on duo, with jb's famous das lied von der erde)

so, top marks and a valuable addition to mahler discography, alongside bernstein's cbs mahler 3 with nypo, but oh so much better sound and balance

and at £8 it is so cheap..it would be cheap at twice the price

gezza

S. E. Blake says:
I quite agree with your rating of this version. For me this is the definitive recorded reading of Mahler 3 and along with the 9th symphony, also performed with the Concertgebouw, it remains the finest of interpretations by perhaps the most consistent of Mahlerian conductors in concert during the last 40 years.
