5.0 out of 5 stars WAR AND PEACE, 25 Nov 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: War And Peace [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is perfection in the world of cinema, Hollywood tried
to do a remake of it years ago but all they made of it was a
glorious load of not worth passing comment on, it will do for
the north american cinema goers. Thank-you Mr Bondarchuk for
making this sumptious feast for the eye. The costumes are
superb, the battle scenes are stunning, the cinematography is
breathtaking, everything about this wonderful film cannot be
put onto paper you have to see it to see how good the film
maker's art can and should be.

T.J.Byford says:
I suspect this version is the horrible print done for American tv broadcast and is availalble in a heavily cut 3 disc set in 4:3 ratio. I bought this set when it was first released and was terribly disappointed. I saw the full film on its first release in the UK around 1967 at the cinema and mightily impressive it was on the big screen. Apart from the truncation and the 4:3 ratio, the quality of this print is abysmal and for lovers of this epic work by Bondarchuk, it should be avoided at all costs. Fortunately, the full length version in all its glory and widescreen, I believe 2.35:1, is now available on Artificial Eye in a 5-disc collectors edition. Now this is something to snap up and enjoy.
