A Dissenting Voice,
This review is from: The Shawshank Redemption [DVD] (DVD)The Shawshank Redemption is undoubtedly a decent film, but it is some way off being a great film. The narrative is predictable, the dialogue at times is so cornball you have to stifle laughter especially at lines like “I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged “ etc etc. There are moments of great drama and edgy dialogue but it is only ever “gritty” in a big studio way. Maybe it’s because it’s lauded so highly, or that I just find it the epitome of slushy Hollywood buddy movies but this film is universally over-rated.
The one tragedy is that was beaten to (an undeserved) Academy Award by an even more sentimental bag of tripe – Forrest Gump. If you can sit through two hours of Tom Hanks making a fool of himself then you’ll probably love The Shawshank Redemption.
