This review is from: Book of Haikus (Paperback)
There seems to be two schools of thought on haiku, the first sticks to the old, outdated form and the second is new, modern and not afraid to push back the boundaries of the art form. I believe Jack Kerouac was one of the latter and did a great job at it too! Experimental, subtle and moving. A lovely book of poetry. Lived in and real as all true poetry should be. Whilst a strict adherence to the rules brings some limitations, I still appreciate the genius in doing so. But as a poet I would only ever accept this if it were so, and if what is being conveyed is still magical. I certainly believe modern haiku should evolve and if it eventually becomes something else so be it. This volume however tries to do both and Kerouac's input can be seen as a step forward for the genre.
