This review is from: The Shakespearean Stage 1574-1642 (Paperback)
I was really impressed with this book. There are so many books published with information on the time of Shakespeare and the performing conditions of this era. This book, however stood out, it was well written, in depth and had clearly defined chapters, which made it ideal for looking up one aspect of this era of performance, rather than having to read the whole book, to find a specific bit of information. It was engrossing and a very interesting read as well as being fairly detailed and informative. Having been recommended this book by university lectures, I would recommend it to any student wishing to understand this period in more detail, and it contains some very useful quotes. It also provides basic foundations for any Shakespearean novice interested in his work and his contemporaries. It also explores hypotheses surrounding rival companies and is particularly useful when studying the different playing places in London and the performing conditions in the Provinces of England. Overall a very good, informative, relatively specific and concise book.
