Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Some fairly original offerings in 'Mark Hix on Baking'. Among the savoury dishes are Moroccan 'cigars' of lamb and pine nuts, roast lobster with white port and ginger, and ham hock, snail and wild garlic pie. Sweet treats you may not have encountered before include saffron and olive oil cake, fennel galette and home-made garibaldis. Plenty of familiar dishes too, if you're more of a traditionalist - chocolate cake, profiteroles and honey baked ham, to name but three. Veggie dishes include truffled cabbage and stuffed onions.
The styling of the book is not particularly to my liking - photos have a cold cast, and there are a few recipes without any pictures at all (though admittedly not that many). I always get a bit jel when I see lovely old tins and cookware that I can never find myself for love nor money, so in a slightly mean spirited fashion I'm taking a star off for that too.
Perfectly decent book, but just did not blow me away.
