This review is from: Black Velvet Masterpieces (Hardcover)A book based on an outre culture. The subject matter adorns the gift shops of urban tack; John Wayne, Hendrix, doey eyed children, dogs playing poker, overweight Elvis, horses, Bruce Lee and cats. Sentimental wistful imagery gracing a thousand abodes where people wish their lives away in projected 70's dreams.
Then there is another side to this black velvet world and where for me it becomes extremely interesting, the images of the clowns in grotesque panstick leering out of the frame. The exotica of the South Seas beauties the Gaugin/Leerteg dreamworlds of somewhere someplace paradise exists with unadorned splendor of Cecilia Rodrigez. The Mexican imagery of stark weatherbeaten faces, Sakalin Back Light Vietnam angst, the Devils and the connection to the indigenous cultures these techniques arose from.
They fall into the black hole of kitsch when they connect to the mainstream worlds existing outside of these South Sea Bubbles. It is a reminder of escapist fantasy rather than introspection dredging the self for internal truths emerging as gems.
The techinque itself is shrouded in secrecy, only those initiated can pull it off.
This book is a pointer to the museum of velvet paintings in Oregon and as part of the surreal world experience this place is worth the visit on any cultural map. Along with European Follies, folk customs and disappearing ethnic worlds these oases lying outside the wide vast deserts of mainstream culture need to be carefully cultivated as imagination needs nurture.
