5.0 out of 5 stars A Pastoral Pop Masterpiece, 7 Jan. 2000
This review is from: Apple Venus: VOLUME 1 (Audio CD)
Its been 7 years since the last XTC album but when the result is so exquisite its worth the wait. This is an album of finely judged arrangements and beautiful songs. Whereas many XTC albums have been let down by Andy Partridge's eccentric songwriting, on Apple Venus he is on fine form. Whats more it flows together sylistically unlike any of their other albums with its feel of the sun going down on village England. The startling opener 'River Of Orchids' sets the scene with its plucked strings and odd rhythms (they've been listening to Sravinsky) plus the environmental concerns of its lyrics. The first single 'Easter Theatre' also has an unusual dissonance - no chance of it being a hit then - but stick with it and eventually the melody will burst over you. This time out there's no need for Colin Mouldings catchy tunes to rescue the album. He throws his hat into the ring just twice, most notably with the carefree 'Frivolous Tonight'. However this is very much an Andy Partridge album. As Guy Barkers trumpet fades away on the elegaic closer 'The Last Balloon' your senses will really be working overtime. Roll on Volume 2.
