This first-person account of the horror and indignity of life as a Jew in occupied Eastern Europe is written without anger, and in such a matter-of-fact way that it is all the more moving. Most people know what happened to the Jews during World War 2, but this book makes explicit the daily grind of uncertainty, perpetual hunger, cold, exclusion from public places and menial work, yet does so in a non self-pitying way. I would recommend this book to adolescents as well as to adults who possibly don't appreciate the dangers that nationalism and racism can lead to.
