EXCELLENT CELEBRATION OF THE SONGS BY THE ICONIC SERGE GAINSBOURG,
This review is from: Vamps Et Vampire - The Songs Of Serge Gainsbourg (Audio CD)
Ace follows up previous collections of French pop Mademoiselles with this definitive tribute to one of France’s most celebrated songwriters, Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991) who also multi-tasked as pianist, film composer, poet, painter, screenwriter, writer, actor and director and provocateur with his diverse output covering almost every music genre from jazz, Latin, chanson, pop and yé-yé, through to rock ‘n’ roll etc.
Naturally, such diverse talent appealed to the likes of the high-profile Brigitte Bardot who revs up via her HARLEY DAVIDSON as well as later adding CONTACT and along the way other glamorous French actresses Anna Karina (SOUS LE SOLEIL EXACTEMANT), Catherine Deneuve (OVERSEAS TELGRAM), Vanessa Paradis (TANDEM), Juliette Greco (LA JAVANAISE) and dancer Zizi Jeanmarie (VAMP ET VAMPIRE) amongst those whose vocal abilities may fail to match their looks but nevertheless manage to convey undoubted sex appeal through black vinyl just by singing the lyrics even though my Gallic language is somewhat limited.
Add British-born Jane Birkin (CON C’EST CON CES CONSEQUENCES) and Marianne Faithful (HIER OU DEMAIN) who both earned notoriety during their still on-going careers whilst France Gall became visible beyond French borders when she won the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest for Luxembourg with POUPEE DE CIRE, POUPEE DE SON and that song included, she’s also represented by LES SUCETTES. The better-known, Francoise Hardy (COMMENT TE DIRE ADIEU and L’ANAMOUR} and the then-upcoming Nana Mouskouri (LES YEUX POUR PLEURER) bring their familiarity to bear, with other included lesser-known singers equally relevant on this twenty-five track collection dedicated to one of France’s iconic providers of popular songs.
