Great cover, dubious from there,
This review is from: How to be Adored (Hardcover)
I got this book from the library and am glad I did.
While there were a lot of interesting info about Hollywood stars past and present, I often found the suggestions given conflicting at best and downright silly at worst.
Be prepared to change.....Rita Hayworth became a success only after dying her hair red and having electrolysis to raise her hairline...but don't be afraid to be yourself. Lauren Bacall refused to have her hairline, teeth or eyebrows altered...and she became loved for these unusual features.
Be a lady, kind, charming, gracious. But don't be afraid to posture or even stab someone in the back to make an entrance, a la Bette Davis and Jean Harlow.
For a sexy boudoir invest in faux zebra skins and those ubiquitous mules? Puleeeze, isn't there anything modern you have to suggest?
The most unequivocal chapter I thought and probably the most valuable was the one that talked about the importance of voice quality... it is for this and the really unusual cover that I give this one star. It's unfortunate that this chapter wasn't expanded to be a little more of a practical guide.
You may find it an interesting read if, like me, you hadn't really read much of the antics of Hollywood stars from times past. Nothing new under the sun there I guess. However, I found this book promised a lot and didn't really deliver.
