Iconic "Pretty Baby" Brooke Shields,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Pretty Baby [DVD] (DVD)
There are enough reviews regarding the films content so I won't repeat what has already been stated. I will try to be original with a few comments that I think are worth making.
The performance of Brooke Shields is quite simply stunning for a twelve year old playing what must have been a difficult role to feel comfortable performing. Her maturity and ability to play underage prostitute Violet in this excellent period piece has to be admired and belied her tender years. She certainly steals the acting accolades from the likes of Susan Sarandon and Keith Carradine, and I feel that Brooke never really became the star name that her talent warranted. She should have been as big as another of her contempories, Jodie Foster, in my opinion. Apart from a couple of other films Brooke seemed to disappear from roles worthy of her abilities as an actress.
A couple of side thoughts; first, it was funny seeing Antonio Fargas playing a jazz pianist, fresh out of playing his role as "Huggy Bear" in Starsky and Hutch. Second, as a recent convert to the music in the period that "Pretty Baby" is set in, and noticing that the legendary Ferdinand 'Jelly Roll' Morton was in the credits, it is a shame that the soundtrack is not available on cd.
But the film is truly a tour de force for the young and beautiful Brooke Shields - simply magnificent.
