rather good late offering from Mr Mingus,
This review is from: Let My Children Hear Music (Audio CD)
This was the first Mingus album I heard and it remains one of my favourites.
It has a big band sound - a massive sound, in fact, and it is mostly scored by the sound of it - no Sun Ra-style mass improvisation here.
Highlights for me are-
"The Shoes of the Fisherman's Wife" which presents stop-start variations and may be familiar to Mingus fans from various compilations.
"Don't be afraid, the clowns afraid too" which begins with swirling circus effects and builds into a heady call-and-response brass theme, typical of Mingus. Somewhere in the middle you get a great little bit of improvised flute that darts between the speakers.
Altogether a great little album and well worth a listen.
