3D Side Effects,
This review is from: Nintendo 3DS Handheld Console - Aqua Blue (Console)
OK, so the 3D is pretty cool, no denying it. But after using a 3DS for a few days now I'm starting to find some unwanted side effects.
NOTE before reading on you do have a simple slide switch that allows you to adjust the depth of the 3D as well as turning it totally off.
The fact that you don't have to wear 3D Glasses is great but, the screen has quite a limited "sweet spot" (the angle and distance at which the 3D works). Tilt the 3DS at a relatively small angle, or move your head too much and the 3D's lost and you see the blurred overlaid image that the system uses to produce the whole affect. Imagine watching a Movie in 3D with glasses, removing the glasses, with glasses, removing them again and so on.
I found that after a while my eyes were straining to constantly re-adjust and there have been reports of prolonged use (over 30 minutes) causing headaches and nausea. I don't play at this length of time so this is just reports but I can understand why.
My advice, you may/may not get on with the 3D. Before buying, if you can, try the hardware out. If you get on with it, it is worth it!

How old was your son when he first got it? I'm thinking of getting one for my 5yr old daughter and thought she might be a bit too young but if I can turn it off that will be brill.

To Mr Richard Keith Ashby: Very poor use of a Nintendo 3DS reviews forum if you are a normal human. Why use the word "them" when "the" will convey a brilliant sense of irony to your criticisms of grammar and spelling? Absolute genius, I'm sure.

Yes Rebecca you can buy it for your daughter as the 3D feature can be turend off. In fact, Nintendo recommend that you turn off the 3D when you give the console to children of that age.
I think it's ok for them to play 3D above age 6? not quite sure?
But yes, 100% you can turn it off.

I've heard that a lot, the 3D can give bad headaches, I also heard a lot, something you haven't mentioned here, that the screen got scratched because the thing was touching the screen when the lid was shut? I can't really see it myself though, and I'm thinking of buying it so it would be appreciated :)
