This review is from: Don't Sell Your Coat: Surprising Truths About Climate Change (Paperback)Some scientists and many activists maintain that CO2 released by burning fossil fuels is likely to cause irreversible global warming and destruction of life. Their conviction has a religious quality about it as one can hear when listening to James Hansen or Al Gore. Money, academic ambition and politics have polarised the debate since 1970. Harold Ambler is a journalist with a long interest in the subject and his 270-page book is easy to read. It discusses climate history, events, mechanisms and personalities, contrasting human progress in warm eras with death and disease in cold times. He concludes that our present anti-CO2 schemes based on computer models and brief records are misguided. Human memory is short and accurate measurement is patchy and recent. Possible effects of solar cycles have been neglected. The earth has not had runaway warming in 4 billion years with much higher CO2 levels. We are fortunate to live in a warm period as there is clear historical evidence of constant alternation between ice and warmth which could not have been caused by man.
