5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Manual Wind Classic Looks, 14 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: DeTomaso Men's Automatic Watch SAVONA Edelstahl Lederarmband Schwarz Handaufzug DT1028-A DT1028-A with Leather Strap (Watch)
This Detomasso Savona cost me around 60 which is less than my last battery change for a decent quality quartz watch. It came in a tin and was very well padded in foam. First impressions were very good, this is a big watch with a lot of presence which looks and feels classy like a very much more expensive watch.

It has a very large glass case back so the really nicely machined mechanism can be seen, it really is lovely to look at the mechanism which is not of the skeleton type, but rather made up of machined blocks, cogs, and blued screws. According to web information I have researched, this watch is a rebadged Chinese manufactured Seagull M222s. This is a good thing since Seagull have an excellent reputation, and their watches (if you can get one), are certainly much more expensive than this watch. There is something about the clockwork mechanism that gives a manual watch character. The downside is that you need to wind the watch manually as this is not an automatic mechanism. You will also need to adjust it regularly if it is to remain reasonably accurate. The thing is that we all used to do this prior to cheap quartz watches and radio controlled clocks etc, so it needs a bit of a change of mindset to enjoy owning one. Initially I was nervous about how forcefully to wind it and found that it stopped after 5 hours. I now wind it first thing in the morning and just before going to bed, and wind it until it becomes too stiff to turn easily any further (about 20 back and forth winds from stopped). It gained 20 seconds the first day after I gave its first full wind, then I let it run down. It is currently loosing 6 seconds a day which I am more than happy with. Accuracy will change with the temperature so I will keep an eye on it if the weather ever improves!

The strap is very nice quality, quite soft and very comfortable to wear, with a matte black outer and very neat stiching. I really like the bright red inner face of the strap which is much better than I expected from other reviews, although it is on the short side, and I think those with larger wrists and hands will need to replace it. It has a traditional buckle fastening (with engraved logo) rather than one of those fashionable but difficult to use butterfly clasps.

The only thing I am not wild about is the "Detomasso" engraving on the left of the case which is not obvious on the photos. Although it is nicely done I think it is an over embellishment that is not needed. The face is simple, and bold. The big broad hands and numbers are easy to read, and the lume at night is reasonable. I also like the unusual placing of the seconds dial at the 9 o'clock position. It is a large watch, with a 48mm case, which is "on trend" and even though my wrist is quite thin, this does not look out of scale when I wear it. There are other colour combinations with the steel case, including a white face and white hands, and a black face with orange highlights. There is also a version with a gold case.

The big plus is that I won't be spending out on batteries, and it should keep working well in many years time. Some people seem to be a bit dismissive of the Detomasso brand but if this watch is typical of the brand quality, then in my opinion they are wrong

I'm confused, the description of this watch includes the word 'automatic' but the reviews describe it as 'manual wind', I thought automatic meant automatic wind - can someone enlighten me please as I quite like the look of this watch but couldn't be doing with winding it up every day or two.

Hi....this is NOT an automatic... It is a manual wind so as I said in my review it does need a culture change to think about winding it...I do it morning and evening and the power lasts a bit more than a full day if you forget. It is a really nice watch though with a Seagull mechanism. I love mine...I notice the price is creeping up though on this and all detomasso watches.
