3.0 out of 5 stars Nice projects but much more visual instructions needed, 29 Dec. 2009
This review is from: Sew! (Paperback)
This book is full of lovely sewing projects, but the actual instructions for the slightly more complex projects leave a lot to be desired. I'm a fairly experienced sewer but I have absolutely no idea how to put together, to give but one example, the patchwork knitting bag - many of the instructions are meaningless without some sort of visual aids. Many people find it much easier to follow visual instructions for craft projects rather than complicated written descriptions and I wish Kidston had included more diagrams and less pretty pictures of vintage quilts. I'd like to make that knitting bag but if I do try it I suspect I'll just have to work out how to do it from the picture of the finished project rather than the frankly bewildering guide.

I completely agree, this book was a disappointment. Lots of pretty projects but the instructions are next to useless - again I'm an experienced seamstress but found myself having to re-read the instructions dozens of times to try and make any sense of them. The knitting bag example is a perfect one, I thought there was a page missing at the end it ended so abruptly!

Agreed. I would have to save that most creatives are visual people - it goes with the territory. :D I have to see pictures most of the time.

I decided to give up with the paper template and machine sew it but have got completely stuck on the lining. The template is a different size to what they state in the instructions and too small for the bag I have managed to make. Also have no idea what they are saying in point 11. Gave up and made my own version as couldn't understand the instructions! The bag also is much smaller than initially thought, @50x50cm, fine for me as only on small projects but certainly not big enough if you have a lot of wool or are knitting jumpers - would need to be twice the size!

Do you know of any more helpful guides to sewing? A book that you can personally recommend would be most useful.
