This review is from: Doctor Who: Spearhead From Space [DVD] (DVD)
Now, don't get confused, this isn't Terror of Autons. Terror of the Autons is a light hearted remake of Spearhead. If you ran behind the sofa when a man was eaten by a sofa, or by suffocating plastic flowers, or by the introduction of the evil Time Lord the Master then you've got the wrong DVD. If you wear traumatised by Shop Dummy's slowly coming alive, and blasting the suspecting at a city bus stop wearing 70's gear than you remember Spearhead.
I've just recently realised it myself but this is possible one of the best Doctor Who stories ever made. Spearhead is possibly the most unapologetically terrifying and horrific of all the Doctor Who stories, it truly has atmosphere in spades. It starts off slow with the recent regenerated Doctor coming to earth and discovering that his face has changed and his memory gone. Jon Pertwee has a few subtly comic scenes before he gets down to the business of stopping alien invaders. Spearhead is not dissimilar, in terms of story, to House of Wax and Invasion of the Body Snatchers but it contains such wonderful moments and brilliant tension that it easily stands on its own. Top class.
The DVD extras are okay but the commentary is so dull its like watching paint dry.
