Dark, passionate and satisfying,
This review is from: Sex And Lucia [DVD] (DVD)
It's hard to classify such a complex film into any genre; part passion drama, part comedy, part fantasy, Sex and Lucia will draw you in and not let go. The dreamy, bleached film quality reflects the delicate way in which the film floats between past and present, truth and imagination.
The key theme of the film is summarised by a question posed by Lucia to her partner: "Which would you prefer: wild sex with a stranger, or making love to a partner, which is also wild?".
A night of passion comes back to haunt Lucia's partner Lorenzo, when through a series of twists and turns he is confronted with the result of that night - his daughter Luna. Luna's mother, Elena, has escaped to an island hideaway, where she meets Carlos, step-father of a baby-sitter named Belen. A stolen night between Belen and Lorenzo is horribly interrupted by the death of the child Belen was meant to be babysitting. Guess who the child was? Luna, Lorenzo's daughter. Meanwhile, writer Lorenzo has been scripting his latest book, basing his writing on the story of his life. The climax of the film is the meeting of Lorenzo, Elena, Carlos and Lucia on the island, where the story is brought to its conclusion.
It's testimony to the skill of director Julio Medem that the viewer never loses track of this complex tale. Instead, you're sucked in and carried along on a wave of emotion and drama. This is a deeply moving, warm film that simply invites repeated viewing!
