You really do feel the absence of Catherine Hardwicke from the Directors chair with this movie. Visually it works very well, but gone is the gloomy, brooding atmosphere, the sense of mystery, and the tension of the first movie.
Seen in the cold light of day, or artificial lighting, the Cullens lose their air of mystery, and just look like a really pale family.
Whilst the story is told well, and is arguably more true to the book it is based on than Twilight was, it has lost much of the sense of mystery of the first movie. Even Bella's agony and nightmares after Edward's departure are hard to resonate with, or take seriously. Which is a real pity.
The movie still has a lot to commend though - the depiction of the werewolves in particular is excellent. The sinister nature of Victoria also comes across really well.
