Mike+ the Mechanics is the project of the Mike Rutherford of Genesis. Despite his prog rock backgroung, m+tm are actually produce very good pop music. Some people, when they hear the words "pop music", will immediately jump to the comclusion that it is processed, commercialised rubbish but m+tm is intelligent pop with properly meaningful songs and thoughtful lyrics.
The living years is not realy a masterpiece. It has some brilliant tracks, "the living years" is a fantastic anthem and "poor boy down" is a good laugh, but is by no means a classic or a must have. It may seem strange for me to say this and then give it four stars but despite its' averageness (if that's a word) it has an innocent charm about it with its songs about morals and knife crime that makes you want to listen to it over and over again. Some of the songs are almost embarrassing to listen to, like when the singer suddenly exclaims "Im free!" in the middle of "Why Me?" but they do grow on you and you find that however much you laugh at the songs you genuinely do enjoy them.
If you're looking to be amazed, this is not the album for you but if you are a m+tm fan or you just want some fun pop music to play in the background then it may be worth buying the Living Years. If you want to hear Mike and the Mechanics at their best you should instead buy Beggar on a Beach of Gold which is great!
