No review has entirely pinned or defined this novel; and this one won't because it's a tale which works equally well at a number of levels.
It's a simple story of love and loss. It's a tale of obsession. It's an historical travelogue. It's a morality tale.................It's all of these and more. Beneath the narrative there is so much more. A number of metaphysical principles are explored. The author considers how we use knowledge, whether it's for good or bad purpose. There's an interesting and highly unusual take on life after death and the 'reality' of such life. And there are even elements of quantum physics in the way the author treats time and space and travel through different dimensions.
This is a book which lends itself to further reading. First time through it's difficult to take in the story and the philosophical potential. I loved it; one of my top ten of all time and I urge you to read it. It's a cracking tale even at a superficial level.
