No curb for my enthusiasm!,
This review is from: Curb Your Enthusiasm: Complete HBO Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
Having only caught this series, at number 3, it was great to see the first 2 episodes on DVD establishing Larry David's televison persona, and the characters of his friends and Cheryl, his wife.
The situations are based on the everyday life (work, dinner with friends etc) and dilemmas faced by a fairly incestuous LA media/celebrity set. Larry David's character is a kind of curmudgeonly everyman figure, trying (often ineptly) to navigate the complex, unwritten social rules of this society; inevitably he gets it wrong. You can't help being on his side, though. His distaste for the restaurant waiter captain claiming a 10% tip on top of the usual service charge is shared by us, although we watch with horrid fascination as he unwittingly mishandles the situation and comes off the worst.
This show is brilliantly written by Larry David (once a writer on Seinfield) and is extremely well paced and choreographed. You have to stick with each episode until the very end, as the comedy builds up bit by bit, each apparently inconsequential detail and each embarrassing faux pas building up to a comic tour de force. Like Fawlty Towers, the more you watch, the more you see and appreciate. Watch it!!
