3.0 out of 5 stars Way too pretty, 6 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Three Friends (MP3 Download)
I feel that my duty in this life is to follow musical trails until I hit a dead end. I had left GG untouched until this year, and then bought a few of their albums - using Amazon reviews as a guide. Anyway, there are many groups where one can ponder why they never made the big time - in that parallel universe where all of Elvis Costello's first 6 albums went No. 1 with a bullet. However, that is not the case with GG. They are just ornate and ordinary and way too pretty. If you dig out Keith Richards' summary comment on Mick Taylor it fits GG to a tee.

Prog Rob says:
Gentle Giant are an acquired taste - personally, I love this album but I can see why you might struggle to get to grips with it. I'm wondering if you like 'prog rock' at all - if you have found, say, early Genesis or Yes hard going then Giant was always going to floor you. Have another listen to 'Peel The Paint' and, hopefully, you will see that Gentle Giant could deliver top class rock when they were minded to. I would definitely take issue with describing this band as 'ornate/ordinary/too pretty' - even if you don't like this stuff it is hardly 'ordinary'. A better description might have been 'over fiddly/too complex' - which I would have accepted as 'constructive criticism'.
Looking through your other reviews, I notice that you appear to enjoy the music of The Enid and Camel's 'Snow Goose', so we seem to be in some sort of agreement here.
