No, it's not 'Night of the Demon', but it's still enjoyable.,

This review is from: Casting the Runes [DVD] (DVD)
Broadcast in April 1979, and filmed in the winter of 1978, this adaptation makes good use of snowy locations in Leeds and the surrounding area. Transposing the MR James story to a modern setting works well, and the cast is solid. Whilst we can trust Network to have used the best source available, the transfer is a little grainy in places, and there is some occasional background hiss and hum, but the dialogue is never less than clear. The unsettling incidental music is effective, although I would have preferred it to have been reined in at times, myself. 'Night of the Demon' is one of my favourite films, and although this adaptation shall never displace it in my affections, I'm certainly pleased to have bought it. There have been several TV adaptations of James' stories, and it is pleasing to still be able to buy one, at least, at a reasonable price.
