4.0 out of 5 stars Spankox does a Superb Job on Elvis Classic, 27 Dec 2009
This review is from: Baby Let's Play House (Audio CD)
Baby Lets Play House was released in 1955 and was Elvis's fourth "Sun" single. The original track is a true Presley classic that in my opinion defines his genius and captures the energy, excitement and unpredictability that was bursting from this 20 year-old. Now over 50 years later Spankox manages to give this classic a contemporary feel without losing the freshness and virtuosity of Elvis's voice and also retaining lots of the rhythm and style of Scotty and Bill. This is much better than the JXL efforts in that A little less conversation and Rubberneckin were throwaway Elvis efforts, here we are dealing with Classic Presley. Raw pumped up swamp-like guitar plays on the off beat over Elvis's stuttering, hiccupping Baby baby baby's (this exciting part of the vocal is bit difficult to hear initially, but guess you can't have everything) and beefs up and rises to a crescendo before "that voice" bursts through into 2008 with uninhibited mischievousness. (Think Run DMC crashing through the screen on to the stage in Walk this Way). As a fan this is the Elvis that I think people should hear more of. Whether or not this is a hit in the UK remains to be seen but Spankox has done a superb job on this track and stayed as true as it was possible to the original.
