This review is from: Defensive Tactics: Modern Arrest and Control Techniques for Today's Police Warrior (Perfect Paperback)
As a serving police officer I felt I was missing something in my self defence knowledge. The book is a useful addition to the library of the person it is intended for, ie police officers.
It is american and so has a gung ho aproach at times to dealing with opponents and some of the techniques , for example chokes , should be avoided by any UK officer . I haven't checked but I doubt they are home office approved !
The use of take downs is a useful one and the advise it gives on use of the forearm was a revelation to me. I trained up to brown belt level in karate and I never considered the use of the forearm until I read this book.
I don't think that books are a subsitute for practice however and someone with serious qualms about their own caspabilities would be better consulting their force personal safety trainer or attending a decent martial art/ combat class. For someone with a bit of knowledge and/or experience this book is very good.
Please just don't try the chokes !
