This review is from: The Slap (Paperback)
This book was chosen for a book club read and what a complete pile of manure it is , in my opinion. I wondered if the author was affected by "Sex - Tourettes" from the way the book is liberally peppered with random and inapropriate erotica. He seems to have been indulging himself somewhat during the writing of it and I can only assume that the author wrote it one handed wearing wipe clean suit. This could account for what I think are the poorly written awkward, ham-fisted sex scenes and third rate language. Maybe he didn't have the hand span to do any better. I read a few of them twice, just to be sure but on the whole they were just incidental to the plot and got really tedious really quickly.
The slap itself also seemed to be eclipsed by the repugnant characters and tediously afflicted lives. It's hard to feel any affinity or sympathy with such a collection of self absorbed whingers who must have the fullest swear boxes in the world. The boy was unlikeable and I couldn't bring myself to care what happened to him. I thougt most of the characters deserved a good slap and a dose of something that rhymes with it! What I noticed most in the part about the slap was that it was virtually the only place in the book where someone didn't take the oppotunity to get their tackle out and was therefore a refreshing change.
Some reviews say that the author has tackled lots of complex and taboo issues. Well maybe, some percieve it that way but that doesn't necessarily make it a good book. It seems to me that his tackling of these issues involves a lot of actual tackle and F words and C words and reads a lot like the scrawl on the wall of a public toilet.
The book is far too long and if you do go on to the end you can't help thinking that you'd have been better off if you'd given up after the first two chapters and then used it as a doorstop.
Incidentally If I ever go to Australia and I drop my purse on the pavement I might be tempted to leave it there!

I am struggling to finish this book. I know what you mean about the 'sex tourettes', suddenly the writer changes from utter drivel to vulgar sex scenes and then just as suddenly goes back to utter drivel. I found these bits laughable and the swearing didn't offend me, I just found it pathetic. I will however finish it, you never know it might have a fantastic ending!
