This is the first in a series; I really loved this book. Pazel Pathkendle's world was turned upside down when the Arquali invaded (or `rescued', depending on whether you were on the losing or the winning side) his land of Ormael. Since then, he has tried to survive and ended up being a tarboy - not a bad life, if he can stay alive and out of trouble. But trouble seems to follow Pazel Pathkendle, so it's not surprising he ends up on the biggest ship in the known world, going on the most important diplomatic mission the Arquali and Mzithrini Empires have ever created. But there's so much more going on than even Pazel could have contemplated. How can he know what plots Sandor Ott is weaving, or what Captain Rose is hiding, or what it is that Doctor Chadfallow is trying to tell him? And that's just in the first few chapters!
The world that the author has created is complex and has a history; the peoples of the world are complex and have their own myths, legends and histories. The characters in the story, and there are many, are `real' - they have responses to situations that feel in character, and the bad guys are very very bad indeed. The storyline races along at a great rattling pace, and with each page, there are more layers unfolded for the reader to ponder. This is the first in what I hope will be a great series, and I really look forward to reading the next one.
