..what a fantastic artist, Joe Harriot was. Michael Garrick (MG) is to be commended for bringing these stunning recordings back into the light of day. I must confess that I'd never heard of Joe Harriott until I heard the MG Jazz Orchestra play some of Harriott's stuff at the Vortex in London. I bought the CD on the back of this experience...and when I heard the first few bars of the opening track of this CD ('Moaning') I thought, 'Oh-Oh, a talented Charlie Parker clone...', but oh how wrong was that first impression...It isn't long before Harriott is off on a musical adventure very much his own. This is simply stunning stuff, perhaps some would say 'let down' by the poor 'home-made' technical quality of some of the tracks (complete with over-dubbed bass by Coleridge Goode). But the music easily transcends such quibbles. If you think you don't like 'free-form' (as a jazz-genre), listen to this and be amazed at the imagination and poetry here. There aren't many copies of this CD around so snap this up NOW.
