I have just finished this book having read it over a 2 week period travelling to work. I found it inspirational, encouraging and personally challenging. Rob is very open about his feelings and it not macho in anyway. Some of his decisions were frankly bordering on crazy, such as cycling through Afghanistan and I raised my eyebrows at Iran. However, his experience of most of the countries is that the majority of people are warm, caring, friendly and helpful. He certainly rewrote some stereotypical thoughts I had in some areas and offered some insightful reflections on culture. The part of the west doing things as long as it doesn't harm others while Iran is more about damaging the spiritual made interesting reading.
The pace of this book is good in that it doesn't get bogged down in too much detail yet captures the essential parts of the trip. People are the main focus rather than simply the landscape or road he was travelling along which made it a very personal read. Meeting his wife must have been the icing on the cake for him.
A good read for a person who is into cycling, travelling or culture.
