5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive documentation of Toronto's legendary psych band, 23 July 2013

This review is from: sussex (+7 (Vinyl)
I remember about a year ago Marty Roth, of Bent Wind, and I were chatting online when he told me the "definitive" edition of "Sussex" was going to be reissued by a label from Greece and that it was gonna be nice. Well, its one year, I finally have the reissue of "Sussex" and Marty was understating reality. What arrived in the post a few days ago was a sturdy cardboard box housing the 12" 180 gram vinyl reissue of Bent Wind's absolute classic Canadian psych gem "Sussex." The reissue, on Anazatisi Records, has a bonus track found added to the end of both sides of the LP. These 2 tracks are the a- and b-sides of the lone single released in connection with the album, "Castles Made Of Man" b/w "Sacred Cows." Nice touch. Then comes the 7" EP of containing the "Lost Ryerson Tapes," but only the 4 tracks recorded in March, 1970, by a student at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto, while the band was practicing. Super nice touch. Then there's the 8 page insert which contains a band "history and commentary" by Roth, and lyrics to all the tracks on "Sussex." Super Cool move. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the 4 page folding wrapper that covers the 7" EP which opens to reveal the lyrics to the songs on the EP and other recording information regarding the 7" piece. Wow! The presentation is absolutely amazing. Oh yeah again, I forgot to mention the groovy poster that also comes in the package. Yet another wonderful touch. I couldn't ask for more, the "Sussex" remastered to sound better than ever, the true "Lost Ryerson Tapes" excluding the 1991 duet recording of "Elanore Rigby" done by Roth and Gerry Gibas, but definitely not part of the repertoire of the original Bent Wind. And you get both sides of the band's sole 45. So, you get the complete recorded legacy of the 1969-1970 original lineup of Bent Wind, 14 tracks total, with a run time just short of 60 minutes. The 12" and 7" slabs of vinyl come in very limited numbers. There are but 350 of the black vinyl sets like I got, and if I recall correctly there were 100 copies on color vinyl, but I am not absolutely certain of that. So, package, track listing, booklet, lyric sheets, 180 gram 12" vinyl LP with bonus tracks accompanied by a 4 song 7" EP, 8 page booklet by Mr. Bent Wind himself, Marty Roth, and a reprint of a classic Bent Wind poster from the days of the "Sussex" lineup. My overall rating? The music is incredible! The songs are originals, by Roth and Gibas mainly, and there's good reason why "Sussex" is considered absolute classic Canadian psychedelic rock. Add to this the inclusion of the lyrics of every song on the LP, EP and 45. I'm still having a hard time adjusting to the shift back to vinyl and the price structure of LPs, EPs, and 45s, compared to CDs. This sticker shock can be very difficult to overcome. In the case of this deluxe reissue of "Sussex" it was much easier to overcome the sticker shock than I expected. After ordering one copy and receiving a copy of Bent Wind's limited edition 1989 LP "The Fourth Line Is....You Will" as I suspected I might, with the price being nearly $20 less than any other supplier, I tried again, and this time brought success. Thank goodness. I give this release, the complete Bent Wind Mark I, 5 stars and then some. It definitely lives up to Marty's introduction and more. Lots more.
