My 'Best album of 2010',
This review is from: Queen Of Denmark (Audio CD)
I went to see John Grant play at a small local venue on the strength of reviews I'd read in the Guardian and Uncut. But nothing prepared me for the sheer majesty of John Grants songs and his beautiful sonorous voice.
He writes personally but on universal themes, his lyrics shot through with aching melancholy tempered with ironic humour. Musically drawing on a diverse mix of influences: I hear a not to a(great but twee?) Carol Bayer Sager song; Elton John & The Carpenters as well as numerous current alt/indie leanings, (Midlake back him on this album).
I'd say this John Grant album draws easy comparison with Rufus Wainwright for its complexity, simplicity and beauty. The best album I've bought this year, and I've bought a few!
